Shortly after I moved to Texas, I met my wife, Monica. We got married in 1987 and have two daughters that we homeschooled. Although I had steady work, and we were doing OK, our finances were in chaos. Over time that took a toll on our family life.
In 2007 a good buddy of mine presented me with a business opportunity.
This was a guy I had known for years. He knew my financial situation, and I trusted him implicitly. By this time Monica and I had been married for twenty years.
Our girls were teenagers;
We had nothing in savings;
Nothing for retirement;
And were $40K in the hole with credit card and consumer debt.
I had nothing to lose by listening to my friend when he came to me with this new money-making idea. He showed me how to start a part-time business on the Internet.
Like I said, I was a construction worker all my life…even to this day, I’m probably more proficient with a hammer than I am with a Smartphone!
Due to my incredible faith in my friend, I put my life in his hands.
He then set up a website for me to get started. The initial goal for my wife and I was to make an extra $200-300 a month to pay off our credit cards. The business was intended to help individuals and families save on their energy and utility bills. This eventually extended to providing cell phone service, internet, alternative healthcare options, home security, and credit card processing.
Soon I was making more than enough, to not only pay off all our debts but to begin a savings and retirement fund for myself and Monica.
That’s when things really changed for me.
When I first started, all I could think about was getting out of debt and being a better provider for my family. Once the money started coming in, the focus gradually shifted away from myself and what I could get out of it.
I’ve never shied away from admitting to my personal relationship with the Carpenter from Nazareth. He’s quoted as saying, “Whatever you’ve done to the least of these, you’ve done unto me.” In a people-oriented business, how could I not see a reflection of Him in them? It goes into Servant Leadership, which is at the heart of my Faith: I, too, had once been in the situation of the people I was helping, so mercy and forgiveness are almost a must.
I think people can see, “Hey this guy can do it, maybe he can help me do it”.
